DJ X - The Powermove Radio Show (CKLN 88.1) Jan 1990

DJ X - The Powermove Show (Jan 1990)

Another tape of Toronto Rap Radio courtesy of my man Neogeo and this time from another legendary Toronto Hip Hop Show called The Powermove. From what I was told X just arrived back from diggin in New York and came back with the newness! I remember Neogeo saying this was the first time he heard The Gas Face. I have to say that the Kool D & Technolo-G track I Go To Work is my fav on this mix with Ced Gee on the SP1200 providing a banging drum track! I have more Ron Nelson & DJ X to come so stay tuned...

Side A / Side B (Re-Up)

Ron Nelson's Fantastic Voyage Program (CKLN 88.1) 1987

Ron Nelson's Fantastic Voyage Program (CKLN 88.1) 1987 (Re-Up)

From promoting concerts to DJ'ing & hosting radio shows to owning his own studio & record label Toronto's Hip Hop scene would be no where without Ron! This show's from sometime in late 1987, Scott La Rock had just been killed as you hear Ron speak on that and why KRS did not attend his funeral. Also features a nice shout out to each hood in Toronto from KRS & company. Enjoy!

Doo Wop & Da Bounce Squad - Noo Trybe Bootleg Summer Sampler '94

Taken From Robbie's Unkut Doo Wop Interview:

What was happening leading up to the ‘95 Live tape?

Before that, I was known as having the Bounce Squad, which is a group of unknown MC’s I put together. We were really becoming known for our intros – we always did catchy concepts. Every tape I put out from ’93 up to right when ’95 came in was with the Bounce Squad. That’s what everybody was really looking forward to – what the Bounce Squad were gonna do next on the intro. But then I got a record deal with Virgin Records around Fall of ’94, and that’s when everything just went down the drain with the Bounce Squad because it just caused all kind of problems. The label wanted us to move to LA for like a year to record the album…as good as that sounds to some people, after we agreed and we signed the deal, THEN they told us about this ‘moving to LA’ thing. We felt we was gonna lose the streets in New York, because every month it was like anticipation for the next Bounce Squad intro. We figured like, ‘We’re gonna record an album, but we’re gonna lose the streets. So what good is the album gonna do?’ So back and forth we went with the label and we asked for a release. We didn’t want to do the deal anymore. They said, ‘OK, we’ll give you a release but we gotta keep Snagglepuss, which was like our Method Man. Like the way Method Man is to the Wu. They told me he agreed to it! Behind my back, he agreed to staying with them and moving to LA to doing a solo album! He was a key component in the intros, so it was like, ‘What the hell is this?’ So that caused all kinds of problems where, ‘How we gonna do these intros and not have somebody that everybody looks forward to? His punch-lines and his character…man, this is crazy’. So we took a little break.

So how did you get the Virgin deal? I only ever saw the 12”.

‘The Bounce Master’ and ‘Hit ‘Em In The Head’. That’s what actually got me the deal with Virgin. What it was, they just signed me and they signed The Luniz at the same time. I was in the process of waiting for my advance and all that to come in, and the A&R calls me and goes, ‘Yo, don’t you have a crew of MC’s called the Bounce Squad?’ Somebody put him up on it I guess – after he signed me. He was like, ‘Can we add two to the deal? We want Uneek and Snagglepuss’. Like a dick, not knowing the business, I added them to my deal. I was being cool to my peoples, but that was bad business. They shoulda got separate deals! It was a good thing that I didn’t fuck with ‘em, ‘cos they were doin’ shiesty stuff from the jump, right from the door.

DJ Q-Bert & DJ A-Trak - Wash Yer Butt

DJ Q-Bert & DJ A-Trak - Wash Yer Butt

One of the more hard to find Scratch Practice tapes from the Skratch Pikl crew. This one features Q-Bert & A-Trak and was recorded in July of 1997. Each side has both DJ's catching wrek over a beat for 30 minutes. Side A is your basic drum beat you hear on the dirt style scratch records. I wish they switched the beat up as it gets a little old but not the B-Side. We get 30 mins of The Jungle Brothers - How Ya Want It (We Got It) Instrumental. I could listen to that shit for 45 mins if I had to. Not many people can listen to a full scratch practice tape so this is for my headz that appreciate the art of the cut, enjoy!

The Roots - Live In Swedan 1997

Since my man Vincent dropped the Illadelph Halflife Demos I thought I would share this live recording from 1997 of The Roots performing in Swedan! I believe this is from a radio broadcast maybe Radio One but I'm not sure? Audio quality is great and you also get a nice little interview afterwards. Enjoy!

Milk Crate Presents - Millkmatic (A Collection Of Milk Crate Remixes)

I guess you could say this CD is along the same lines as Frankenstein's Live From New York Project as it features Remixes of known tracks courtesy of DJ's Flatline & KendeR. I'll go with The East Flatbush Project as my favorite Remix on this CD and I can't front, that Interlude beat is dope too! Enjoy!

Turntable Wizardry Stage 1: Ft Q-Bert, Shortkut, Rhettmatic, Babu & Melo-D

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe this is one of the first instructional videos on Scratching and DJ'ing. This is from around 95/96 and was put out with the help from Vestax and Up Above Records. You get a brief discussion on DJ'ing, Turntable Setups, Beat Matching, How To Scratch, A Solo Routine from each DJ with a Team Routine from Babu & Melo-D plus the video for Key Kool & DJ Rhettmatic's - Can U Hear It?! Shout out to the big homey B_ill for all the DJ Videos he lent me back in the day!

Justo Presents The Mixtape Documentary

Since Gildog blessed us with Mr Freeze's 12th Anniversary Party, I thought I would drop another Documentary where you can put some more faces to those Mixtape DJ's names. I know the Diggers Union have been posting some clips from this Doc but here it is in full for anyone who hasn't checked this out. A great behind the scenes look at the mixtape game from the prespective of the DJ's themselves. R.I.P. Justo! Thanks for your contribution to the Mixtape game...

DJ Melo-D - The A.M. Workshop (2001)

I was a big fan of Melo-D's Turnfable Mixtape from 97 and was wondering when he was gonna drop a new tape. Fast forward a few years and Melo is backatcha with a couple more mixtapes fresh for the new millenium. He dropped Aquaboogie in 2000 which you can find here courtesy of my man Bzrwon & The A.M. Workshop in 2001. Now Aquaboogie was more on the funk tip so it was nice to see Melo back with some Hip Hop. 60 minutes cut up Beat Junkie style! Enjoy!
